Price Check: Mercedes Prices All-New 2015 C-class Sedan, GLA-class Crossover

Price Check: Mercedes Prices All-New 2015 C-class Sedan, GLA-class Crossover

Mercedes-Benz is smack in the middle of a product offensive, and we now know how much two of its upcoming weapons—the all-new 2015 C-class sedan and GLA-class small crossover—will cost.

With the CLA-class now occupying the bottom rung of the Benz ladder, the C-class no longer has to serve as the brand's price leader. Having a littler brother also freed it up to become larger and more luxurious, and MSRPs are commensurately higher than before. For its part, Mercedes claims that far higher levels of standard equipment mean that the cost hasn't increased much at all. The C300 and C400 4MATIC models both go on sale at the end of August, while the rear-drive C300—the C400 won't be available here with RWD—will arrive in the first quarter of next year. Here's the breakdown:

2015 Mercedes-Benz C300 Sedan: $39,325, includes turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine (241 hp, 273 lb-ft), seven-speed automatic, dual-zone automatic climate control, Bluetooth phone integration and audio streaming, push-button ignition, automatic headlamps, seven-inch display with central knob and touch-pad controls, power tilt and telescope steering column, rain-sensing wipers, power-folding side mirrors, MB-Tex faux-leather upholstery, aluminum interior trim, and more.

2015 Mercedes-Benz C300 4MATIC Sedan: $41,325, includes all of the above plus all-wheel drive.

2015 Mercedes-Benz C400 4MATIC Sedan: $49,515, includes all of the above plus twin-turbo 3.0-liter V-6 (329 hp, 354 lb-ft), seven-speed automatic, four-piston fixed front brake calipers, Premium package (heated front seats, SiriusXM satellite radio, Burmester premium audio, LED headlamps, and proximity entry), and Sport package (open-pore matte-black ash wood interior trim, 18-inch AMG wheels, sport suspension, AMG body kit, black headliner, sport seats, flat-bottom steering wheel, cross-drilled front brake rotors, aluminum pedal caps, AMG floor mats, and stitched MB-Tex dashboard cover).

C300 buyers will need to spend $2700 for the Premium pack and $2500 for the Sport bundle, although they also have the option of the Luxury package, which costs $650 and brings unique 17-inch wheels, a comfort suspension, a three-pointed-star hood ornament, wood interior trim, and the MB-Tex–lined dash.

Extracost options for all C-classes include any paint color other than basic white or black ($720), a Lighting package ($800; adaptive high beams and dynamic headlamps), the Multimedia package ($2690; navigation, 10-gigabyte hard-drive storage, 8.4-inch high-res screen, CD/DVD player, SD slot, SiriusXM Traffic and Weather, and backup camera), and the fragrance diffuser as seen on the S-class ($350). Also on offer: Airmatic air springs ($1190), an Interior package ($2300; leather upholstery, ventilated seats, ambient lighting, illuminated doorsills, and power and memory passenger's seat), the Driver Assistance pack ($2800; Distronic Plus automatic cruise control with auto braking, active blind-spot and lane-keeping assists, as well as Pre-Safe Plus rear-end collision protection, steering assist, and Brake Assist Plus with cross-traffic detection), and a package that bundles hands-free trunk access with a power-closing trunklid ($250).

The 2014 C-class started with the rear-drive $36,725 C250 Sport and its 201-hp 1.8-liter turbo four. The $40,325 C300 4MATIC used a 3.5-liter V-6 good for 248 horsepower, while the $43,025 rear-wheel-drive C350 Sport topped the lineup with a 302-horse V-6. For competitive comparison, the 2015 BMW 3-series lineup begins at $33,700 for the 180-hp 320i. The more directly comparable 3-series models—the 240-hp 328i and the 300-hp 335i—start at $38,350 and $44,450, respectively, with rear-wheel drive. All-wheel drive costs an additional $2000.

Mercedes also released pricing on the GLA250 and GLA45 AMG sans in-depth options information. Both the 208-hp GLA250 4MATIC and the 355-hp GLA45 AMG 4MATIC scoot onto our shores in September, and they'll cost $34,225 and $49,225. The front-drive GLA250 will run $32,225 when it arrives early next year. All use a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine and a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic. The CLA-class sedan—with which the GLA shares its platform and powertrain lineup—costs $1400 less in basic guise and with 4MATIC; it's just $850 less with the AMG treatment.

ALG Predicts Lowest Used Car Prices Since 2008 - Auto Rental News

Posted: 06 Aug 2014 01:00 AM PDT

ALG, the benchmark for forecasting vehicle residual values, says a wave of newer vehicles will gradually bring resale values in line with prices before 2008's economic downturn.

Due to poor sales years from 2008-2012 — as well as 2009's "Cash for Clunkers" program that took nearly 700,000 vehicles off U.S. roads — used-vehicle supplies have been limited. However, ALG estimates that the June 2014 marked the lowest number of used vehicles available for sale.

"The continued strength of new car sales is increasing the availability of high-quality used cars as shoppers continue to trade in their old vehicles," said Larry Dominique, president of ALG and executive vice president at TrueCar. "Additionally, because of the popularity of short 24- and 36-month leases, the drought of used-car supply is already starting to subside. As a result, we expect a steady decline in used-vehicle prices."

By 2017, ALG forecasts the average new vehicle will retain 49.4% of its value after three years — in contrast to the 54.6% retention recorded for vehicles through June 2014. Additionally, ALG expects the growing supply of used vehicles should ease the industry back to a 46% residual average by 2019, the same as it was before 2008.

"The lower residual values will create a greater gulf between used and new vehicle prices, which could steer more consumers to purchase used vehicles," said Dominique. "Consequently, we expect automakers to increase new car incentives to keep up their current sales pace."

Will Forced Price Cuts Affect Tata's Luxury Car Sales in China ...

Posted: 12 Aug 2014 07:58 AM PDT

India's Tata Motors Ltd. (NYSE: TTM) posted a solid earnings beat on Monday and the company's stock rose 7.5%. Tata's sales in its home country have been lagging, but its luxury vehicle sales are booming in China.

Tata acquired its Jaguar Land Rover subsidiary from Ford Motor Co. (NYSE: F) in 2008 for $2.3 billion. The new Jaguar and Land Rover models are among the most appealing cars in the U.S., according to research firm J.D. Power's latest APEAL study. The Jaguar brand was ranked second and the Land Rover brand was ranked fourth.

Sales of Jaguar and Land Rover vehicles in China rose 61% year-over-year, and 30% of all Tata's sales in the quarter were due to the two luxury brands. The two brands' success in China could be threatened, though, by recent Chinese government investigation into Jaguar Land Rover's pricing policies.

Tata cut prices by up to 19% on two Land Rover SUVs and one Jaguar sports car in a preemptive move ahead of a demand from China's National Development and Reform Commission. Tata hopes that this will forestall even more severe mandated price cuts. According to The Wall Street Journal, the price of a Range Rover Sports 5.0 V8 has dropped from 1.89 million yuan (a stunning $305,000) compared with just $87,000 in the U.S.

China imposes a tariff on all vehicles sold in the country that are not at least partially assembled in the country. A Model S from Tesla Motors Inc. (NASDAQ: TSLA), for example, carries a base price of around $94,000 in the United States compared with the equivalent of $121,000 in China.

Tata is more dependent on China for sales of its luxury vehicles than is Tesla or certainly Ford. A new Jaguar Land Rover manufacturing facility will open in China by the end of this year, and that will once again boost margins for the luxury vehicles to a point where the recently announced price cuts won't matter much.
