2013-lr-rr

Luxury models again dominated the list of used cars with the biggest price drops, with nine of the cars in this month's top 10 from traditional luxury brands. Hyundai's full-size Equus sedan — a luxury car from a non-luxury brand — took the 10th spot. Luxury models have made up the majority of cars in the top 10 every month so far this year.

More Used Car News

The average asking price for Land Rover's flagship Range Rover SUV dropped the most in April, falling 4 percent ($2,871). The Audi A3 and Mercedes-Benz CLS-Class round out the top three with price drops of 3.1 percent ($752) and 2.9 percent ($1,730), respectively.

The list of cars with the biggest April price gains was considerably more varied, with everything from heavy-duty pickup trucks to an electric car. The Chevrolet Express 1500 full-size van had the largest jump in asking price with a 2.9 percent ($594) increase. Close behind were the GMC Sierra 3500 and Nissan Leaf, which were up 2.6 percent ($1,158) and 2.5 percent ($488), respectively.

After a couple months of mostly static average used-car prices, asking prices ticked up in April. Late-model used-car prices were up .75 percent ($175) from the prior month to $23,418. The increase might be a reflection of more shopping activity as the spring selling season begins following a long, cold winter in many parts of the country.

The charts detail used cars from the 2011 to 2013 model years with the biggest price drops — as well as those with the biggest gains. To be eligible for the lists, a model had to have at least 250 cars in Cars.com's national inventory.

Used <b>Cars</b> In Five Segments Will Soon Be Cheaper - AOL Autos

Posted: 21 Apr 2014 03:30 AM PDT

Used cars across five different segments will soon get much cheaper, according to data from Black Book. This means that if you're in the market for one of these types of vehicles, you may want to hold off shopping until late spring or summer.

The period between February and April has been known as the "tax-buying" season in the used-car market because many Americans use their tax refund checks from Uncle Sam toward a new used vehicle. Black Book has been tracking this trend over the past couple of years and discovered that used-car values tend to hold steady or even increase during this period, as the market experiences higher than average demand. Then, as the season ends, values drop rather rapidly.

In other words, used cars will be noticeably cheaper starting in May and continuing through July.

Black Book expects the cycle to continue in 2014. According to the company's research, used vehicles in the entry mid-size car, full-size car, full-size crossover, upper mid-size car and compact car segments will experience noticeable declines in value starting in the late spring.

As an example, the average price for a used entry-level car in April is currently $10,741. Black Book expects the average car in that segment to begin declining in value in May, eventually dropping 5.9 percent in value by July. This will bring the average price down to $10,107. Other segments will experience similar declines, with full-size cars dropping 4.2 percent, full-size crossovers dropping 3.6 percent, upper mid-size cars dropping 3.5 percent and compact car prices declining 3.4 percent.

Canadian classic <b>car prices</b> stay strong at spring auction | Driving

A "new" 1968 Buick Skylark California GS with only 8,640 miles on the odometer sold for $27,500; a restored 1965 Mustang convertible with the rare "K code" 271-hp engine option crossed the auction block for $83,000; a beautifully restored, multi-award-winning 1956 Ford Fairlane convertible went to a new owner for $82,000; and a 2009 Bentley Arnage R sedan was hammered down at $104,000 Saturday at the Toronto Classic Car Auction. A 10 per cent buyer fee is added to winning bids.

Close to 300 classic cars and trucks crossed the auction block ranging from a wood-bodied 1915 Ford Model TT depot hack selling for $9,000 to a near-perfect 1971 Pontiac Trans Am with a 455 cu.-in. engine and four-speed transmission at $34,000. The Trans Am owner claimed the "nut and bolt" restoration cost $75,000.

This wood-bodied Ford Model TT depot hack drew a winning bid of $9,000.

There were bargains for sharp bidders. A red 1986 Porsche 944 sports car originally from Texas drew a winning bid of only $2,250. A lucky buyer closed on a show quality 1934 Chevrolet coupe streetrod with a 435 horsepower engine for $23,500.

Chris Verden flew in from Winnipeg for the auction to buy a Corvette. He scored a fully optioned 1977 model that had travelled just 87,800 kilometers for $7,700 plus 10 per cent buyer fee. "I love Corvettes and it was always my dream to own one," says the moving company owner who was a teenager when he decided he would own a Corvette one day.

"I started my company in 1977, so it was only fitting that I buy a 1977 model," he says. Apart from a missing turn signal lever and broken headlight switch, he was happy with his purchase. "The three days here is my vacation and I got what I came for."

Not so lucky were Alain and Denise Courtois who drove to the auction from Victoriaville, Que. They specifically wanted to buy a fully restored 1952 Chevrolet ice cream truck that is completely functional and spent its working life selling frozen delights in the Texas panhandle before ending up in a junkyard.

Alain Courtois, who operates a body shop specializing in vintage vehicles, was outbid at $27,000 and the 60-year-old ice cream truck went to someone else. "C'est la vie!"

Cambridge Custom Chrome shop operator Brian Pollock brought a piece of local motoring history to sell at the auction. His 1936 Packard 1408 limousine with a smooth-running V12 engine was purchased originally by the owners of the century-old Walper Hotel in Kitchener.

The car chauffeur-driven limousine was used to pick up hotel guests at the train station. Among the thousands of passengers helped into the luxurious rear seating compartment over the years were Will Rogers, Bob Hope, Eleanor Roosevelt, Liberace, Guy Lombardo, Duke Ellington, Tony Bennett, Art Carney, Bob Newhart and James Brown.

The car was retired from service in 1961 and given to the employee who had chauffeured passengers in the old limousine for 25 years. The engine had developed a knock and a series of subsequent owners stored the car for more than 40 years.

The car is completely original inside and out with missing paint patina. The original engine has been rebuilt. Owner Brian Pollock was hoping offers would exceed his reserve price of $65,000. "I have butterflies," he said as the car was driven onto the stage in front of several thousand spectators. The final bid of $54,000 just wasn't enough and he took his venerable limo home.

But there were many vintage vehicles that did change hands including a beautifully restored midnight blue 1938 Chevrolet Master Deluxe sedan sold for $22,000; a 1936 Auburn 852 cabriolet, $87,000; a 1969 Pontiac GTO Judge, $64,000; a 1935 DeSoto Airflow sedan, $27,500 and a red 1963 Falcon Futura convertible hammered down at $14,000.

A seldom seen 1958 Oldsmobile Super 88 hardtop in red sold for $54,500. It featured the rare "J2″ triple carburetor engine option and a three-speed standard transmission.

Pickup trucks continue to bring strong money including a 1947 Studebaker selling for $16,500, a red 1958 Chevrolet Apache 3100 for $34,000 and a medium blue 1958 Chevrolet Cameo bid up to $50,000, which did not meet the reserve price.

Continuing the country theme was a restored 1949 Massey-Harris Pony tractor in red with yellow wheels, which sold for $5,100. It would make a terrific piece of yard art for the new owner or be used to pull a hay wagon.

The auction runs until Sunday in Toronto. Stay tuned for more coverage and photos.

2014 Lexus GS - Specifications, Pictures, <b>Prices</b> - Leftlane News

Posted: 06 Dec 2011 01:22 PM PST

Now in its fourth generation, the Lexus GS mid-size luxury sedan can be had in two distinct forms: the hybrid GS 450h and the gas-powered GS 350. Both models are designed to be more stylish inside and out than their somewhat bland predecessors and the GS 350 ups the performance ante with an available driver-focused F Sport package.

Recent Changes
For the latest model year - the GS' second on the market - the sedan benefits from an efficient new eight-speed automatic transmission for rear-wheel-drive models. Other tweaks include a color display for the optional Heads-Up Display, the addition of Rear Cross Traffic Alert and power-folding mirrors to the available Blind Spot Monitoring package and an optional power trunk opener. The previously optional Lexus Night View system has been discontinued.

Overview
The GS sports Lexus' new corporate "spindle" grille that juts inward to emphasize the stylized "L" badge at its center. Underscored by hood detailing and pointed headlights, the grille is distinctive and visually signals that the GS is not just another staid Japanese luxury sedan. Elsewhere, some of the car's detailing is derivative - the LED accent lights were pioneered by Audi, while the side windows terminate in yet another interpretation of BMW's famous Hofmeister kink - but overall the look is far more likely to incite double-takes than the outgoing model.

Inside, the GS takes cues from both the LFA supercar and CT five-door hybrid with an elegant five-passenger cabin highlighted by an enormous (optional) 12.3-inch split screen navigation display. A three-spoke steering wheel and meaty side-view mirrors signal the car's sporting intentions, while elsewhere items like an understated analog clock and tasteful contrasting stitching help to create an air of refined, high-quality luxury. The dashboard contains relatively few buttons due to a mouse-like knob that handles audio and navigation adjustments. Many buyers find that the somewhat fiddly knob is a love-it-or-hate-it item, so shoppers are strongly encouraged to try before they buy.

The GS' interior is exceptionally quiet except when the accelerator pedal is thrust all the way to floor, at which point intake plumbing sends extra underhood music into the cabin.

Let's Talk Power
The GS 350 is powered by a carryover 3.5-liter V6 that uses direct injection to produces 306 horsepower and 277 lb-ft of torque. The mill sends power to the rear wheels through a new eight-speed automatic gearbox that increases fuel economy to 19 mpg in the city and 29 mpg on the highway.

An optional all-wheel-drive system makes the car all-weather capable but carries 200 pounds of extra weight, entails a less efficient six-speed automatic and ultimately reduces highway mileage 26 mpg. The system sends 30 percent of power to the front during normal circumstances, but slushy conditions can see a 50/50 split when needed.

The highlight of the GS 450h is its efficient hybrid powertrain. A detuned version of the aforementioned 3.5-liter V6 works with a pair of generators and a 240-cell nickel metal hydride battery to send a total of 338 horsepower to the rear wheels through a CVT. Even with the additional 400-pound mass of its hybrid system, the GS 450h is actually slightly quicker than the less powerful GS 350.

The GS 450h is rated at 29 mpg in the city and 34 mpg on the highway.

F Sport Package
The GS 350's optional F Sport Package ratchets up the performance factor with a host of technologies designed to improve handling. These are highlighted by the Lexus Dynamic Handling system with Dynamic Rear Steering, which monitors vehicle speed, steering direction and driver inputs in order to calculate the optimum steering angle for all four wheels. The system can independently manage both front and rear wheel steering angles to help improve turn-in response, rear grip, vehicle control and overall agility when cornering.

Lexus says that an Adaptive Suspension system included in the package helps front and rear wheel control and provides agile, sharp and confident driving behavior with a more direct response to the driver's actions.

Visual changes include more aggressive air intakes on the lower front fascia, a unique rear lower valence, a rear lip spoiler and F Sport mesh grille inserts. Special 19-inch wheels shod with meaty tires round out the upgrades included in the package.

Luxury Comes Standard
The GS comes standard with perforated-leather upholstery, genuine wood trim, 10-way power-adjustable front seats, a power sunroof, an eight-inch high-resolution multimedia display, a backup camera, a 12-speaker audio system, automatic dual zone climate control, cruise control, a USB audio device input, Bluetooth phone connectivity and audio streaming, HD radio with iTunes tagging, a backup camera and more.

Optional Features
For customers desirous of an extra dose of luxury, Lexus offers several GS option packages.

The Premium Package includes rain-sensing wipers, heated and ventilated front seats and power rear sunshade.

The Luxury Package includes Premium Package features plus Adaptive Variable Suspension, an Adaptive Front Lighting System, unique high gloss espresso wood ornamentation, semi-aniline leather, 18-way power front driver and passenger seats with articulated back, side bolster and thigh support controls, four-way lumbar, butterfly headrests, passenger seat memory, rear HVAC and audio controls, rear manual side sunshades, 18-inch alloy wheels and wood and leather-wrapped (or trimmed) steering wheel.

Besides the massive 12.3-inch screen, the optional navigation system allows access to Lexus's Enform Application Suite, which pairs with the owner's iPhone, Android or Blackberry to provide local searches through Bing and utilize voice-enabled apps to make restaurant reservations through OpenTable, get movie tickets via MovieTickets.com or tap into internet radio, including Pandora or iHeartRadio.

The system also provides ability to check-in on Facebook and search for various business reviews including restaurants on Yelp. SiriusXM data services offer information on stocks, traffic, weather, sports and fuel prices.

Audiophiles will appreciate the available 17-speaker Mark Levinson premium surround sound audio system. The system provides 7.1 channel surround-sound through 10 channels using a new class D Digital amplifier with a clean 835-watts from 20-20,000 hz at only 0.01 percent total harmonic distortion. Green Edge speakers, a Lexus first, are lighter, more energy-efficient and have less distortion than conventional units.

Occupant Safety
The GS is equipped with 10 airbags, including a knee airbag for both driver and front passenger. Outboard rear seats have seat-mounted side airbags, and all four outboard occupant seating positions are equipped with side curtain airbags.

New Whiplash Injury Lessening front seats reduce the space between the occupant's head and headrest to help limit excessive head movement and help decrease the severity of whiplash-type injuries in certain types of rear end collisions.

Available options to help further enhance occupant safety include a Pre-Collision System (PCS), which uses the Dynamic Radar Cruise Control System to provide early warning of upcoming objects that might result in a collision. The system also uses an infrared camera with new scanning technology to monitor the driver's eyes - in the event that the driver does not appear to be looking forward when a collision appears imminent, the system will initiate the warning at an earlier threshold. If the driver still does not respond and make the appropriate maneuver, the system will initiate braking intervention up to 1.2 seconds prior to impact to help lessen the severity of the collision.

Other optional safety systems include a Heads Up Display; a Blind Spot Monitor (packaged with Rear Cross Traffic Alert and power-folding mirrors) that helps detect vehicles in rear/side blind spots; and Lane Keep Assist (LKA) with Lane Departure Warning (LDW). LKA provides a small amount of active steering torque to help maintain course, while the LDW feature alerts the driver if the system detects that the vehicle is beginning to drift out of the lane.

Key Competitors
Some of the Lexus GS 350's main competitors include the luxurious but conservative Mercedes-Benz E-Class and the elegant and technology-laden Audi A6. Those its handling isn't as focused as that the of the outgoing model, the latest BMW 5-Series is still a strong choice and offers a class-exclusive manual transmission.

The GS 450h squares off against Infiniti M Hybrid and the BMW ActiveHybrid 5, which skew slightly more towards the performance edge of the spectrum. Those looking for decreased fuel costs but don't have to have a hybrid should consider the Mercedes-Benz E350 Bluetec, which features a torquey diesel engine that returns 33 mpg on the highway.

<b>Pricing</b> for Options on the 2015 Ford Mustang Appears Online <b>...</b>

2015 Ford Mustang Pricing / Options Leaked

The pricing for the options on the 2015 Ford Mustang has gone live on the ordering screens of Ford dealers across the nation, and the internet is all abuzz with juicy morsels of product information. From what we've seen so far, it appears that there will be five different basic models: a 3.7-liter V-6 (P8A), a 2.3-liter four-cylinder with EcoBoost (P8T), a 5.0-liter V-8 GT (P8C), a special 50th Anniversary GT (P8R), and an SVT (P8J) which is rumored to be the next Shelby. All that is missing, sadly, is the base pricing…

Fresh from the stand of the New York auto show is the 50th Anniversary Edition, which will be a special version of the GT; the option price is $1595. It appears that it will be offered in either Wimbledon White or Kona Blue, and will come with special interior accents. Better move fast to place your order: Only 1964 copies of the 50th Anniversary Edition will be available this fall.

There are lots of other packages as well. The GT Performance package caught our eye—its $2495 list price was the first one we saw that exceeded the $2368 list price of the original Mustang. (And yes, we know that would be $18,049.74 in 2014 dollars; we just like that old-school number.) Content-wise, the Performance package will include HID headlamps, a Shaker Pro audio system with 12 speakers, and 235/50R-18 shoes. There will be a similar Performance package offered for the EcoBoost model as well, priced at $1995. No other details regarding what that package might include was available.

Other options on the list include a six-speed automatic transmission for $1195, EcoBoost Preferred Equipment Group at $1795, a 3.55:1 limited-slip rear differential for the GT priced at $395, leather Recaro bucket seats for $1595, adaptive cruise control for $1195, and backup assist for $295. The navigation system appears to be a deal at $795, but an as-yet-price-unknown Tech package may be required first. There are also 18-inch, 19-inch, and 20-inch wheel packages (at $155, $995, and $1295, respectively, for the GT), and an intriguing Track package. No pricing or additional info available for that option, however.

Of course, this is all compiled from a wide spectrum of sources, and prices are going to vary from model to model because of standard equipment. Many of the juicy details of the 2015 Mustang are becoming clearer, though, and it's only a matter of time until the Mustang online configurator goes live. We can't wait to see the drop in the productivity of office workers around the globe when that happens.

Fluctuating Gas <b>Prices</b> Can&#39;t Dent Americans&#39; Love Affair With Their <b>...</b>

Posted: 23 Apr 2014 12:08 PM PDT

The national average price for a gallon of unleaded regular gasoline may be $0.15 higher than this time last year, but the fact that gasoline prices in general are trending lower has kept American drivers from reducing their time on the road, according to the American Automobile Association.

AAA reported that the national average price for a gallon of regular unleaded gasoline right now is $3.67, which is a nickel higher than last week's price and $0.15 higher year-on-year.

In general, however, gasoline prices are down compared with previous years. The average price at this time in 2012 was $3.92 per gallon.
Michael Green, a spokesman for AAA, told Oilprice.com that fewer US drivers are letting fluctuations in gasoline prices affect their driving habits.

Green said gasoline demand increased in 2013 by 1.1%, the highest annual increase in more than five years. This translated to an estimated 18.1 billion miles traveled on American roadways last year.

"One possible explanation is that Americans are less concerned about gas [prices], given that prices generally have been less expensive than in previous years," he said. "If this is true, it is possible we might yet again see increased demand [for gas] even with improvements in fuel economy this year."

A report from the University of Michigan's Transportation Research Institute found the fuel economy for model year 2013 was 24.7 mpg, an improvement of 5% since 2012.

But the higher price tag of fuel-efficient vehicles puts them out of reach of most American drivers, Green said.

In March, AAA found that about half of the people it questioned said they were changing their driving habits or lifestyle in general in an effort to curb gasoline use.

Related Article: US Gas Prices Rise, but Not Because of Global Factors

That's down from a similar AAA survey from one year ago, which found that more than 60% of US drivers were trying to use less gasoline, even though the national average price had gone down year-on-year.

In general, most drivers in the United States say $3.50 per gallon is too much to pay for gasoline, according to AAA. Attitudes vary by region, however; someone in California who's used to paying $4 per gallon may feel relief if the price drops to $3.50, which someone in South Carolina may see as extreme.

Green said there's no single price point that triggers a change in consumer behavior. And while most drivers are willing to make changes in things like how often they use the car to run errands or take trips, when it comes to work commutes, Green said less than 50% of people surveyed say they would be willing to carpool, and only 15% would consider leaving their cars behind in favor of public transportation.
"It is difficult for most drivers to significantly change their fuel consumption," he said. "Most people use their cars to get to work, and in many parts of the country there are limited alternatives to driving."

2015 Hyundai Sonata Review, Ratings, Specs, <b>Prices</b>, and Photos <b>...</b>

Posted: 16 Apr 2014 08:04 AM PDT

The outgoing generation of the Hyundai Sonata has been a bold move—a bold move that has paid off, on the merits of a particularly daring yet practical design, strong yet efficient engines, and good value all around. The Sonata has been one of the keys to the brand's surge in popularity and sales in the American market; and now the 2015 Sonata gets a full redesign that subs in 'dignified' for 'dramatic' design-wise while at last delivering on the refinement and technology that the last generation promised.

The 2015 Sonata features a classier and more sophisticated (while also more conservative) take on that current design—one that might very well age more gracefully than the innovative 2011-2014 Sonata. Achieved by adopting the automaker's new Fluidic Sculpture 2.0 design language first seen on the 2015 Genesis, the new look dresses up the curves with a little more formality. The new car is just a smidge longer and wider, which boosts interior space, but overall what it adds up to, essentially, is a more subtle, nuanced look to the car as a whole. Changes are subtle but add up to a suit that looks more tailored, less modern. A new rear lip spoiler with chrome surround, as well as a dual exhaust with bright tips brings the Sonata in line with the mid-size-sedan mainstream, as do standard LED daytime running lamps.

The Sonata Sport is the visual standout of the lineup, with its new front-end appearance (Hyundai points to a grille and bumper it terms more aggressive), with side rocker extensions and added chrome body-side molding. Sport 2.0T models get an additional rear bumper fascia and quad exhaust tips, with showy 18-inch alloy wheels.

Inside, the 2015 Sonata looks a little more formal as well, with controls now compartmentalized into horizontal arrays and angled slightly toward the driver; it's a bit more like the design used in the closely related Kia Optima. The steering wheel now has a sportier design, and the column itself has been redesigned.

Power ratings actually go down a bit for both of Hyundai's engines in the 2015 Sonata, versus last year's model, but the automaker says that the different tuning should result in better responsiveness at low and mid revs. The base 2.4-liter in-line four-cylinder engine now makes 185 horsepower and 178 pound-feet of torque, while the 2.0T version has a smaller-turbine turbocharger and makes 245 hp and 260 lb-ft. In either case, you get a six-speed automatic transmission with Shiftronic manual controls, in this front-wheel-drive sedan.

Underpinning the car is a modified version of the front-wheel-drive platform of the previous Sonata. But the changes to the 2015 Sonata don't just add up to a reskin; Hyundai has reinforced sub-frame mounting points and added stiffer sub-frame bushings, while the Sonata's rear suspension gets a new geometry, with dual lower arms replacing single ones (helping maintain composure under strong braking). Otherwise, the suspension has been tuned for a sportier drive (testing even took place at Germany's Nürburgring) and structural rigidity improved. Torsional strength is up 41 percent.

Quieting the cabin has been a focus, according to Hyundai, and engineers have placed more sound deadening at the firewall and beneath the dash, as well as under the floor—to help seal out road noise.

New technologies lifted from the 2015 Genesis include blind spot detection, rear cross-traffic alert, lane departure warning, and active cruise control. There's also a new Lane Change Assist system that places warning lamps in the side mirrors to warn of approaching vehicles. The Sonata otherwise includes seven airbags, now including a driver's knee bag. In recent model years, the Sonata has earned a federal five-star Overall Rating as well as top 'good' IIHS results.

Don't expect Hyundai to budge much on features, with the new version packing in plenty of features at an impressive price point. Sunshades are still a segment exclusive, and a smart trunk feature allows the owner to approach the vehicle with the key fob in a pocket; once they stand in a particular area for three seconds, the trunk will open.

Infotainment systems have been upgraded in the 2015 Sonata, which includes voice-command Bluetooth features, satellite radio connectivity, and iPod/USB connectivity at all trim levels. On offer on higher trims is a navigation system with larger eight-inch screen, apps compatibility for Pandora and SoundHound, and HD radio; and that system now includes improved touch sensitivity, a split-screen view, Sirius XM Travel Link services, and the ability to record up to 22 minutes of satellite radio.

Those models with navigation also have Apple Eyes Free Siri integration—allowing an enhanced level of tasks. High-end 400-watt Infinity audio is also available. Next-generation Blue Link services also arrive in the 2015 Sonata and include such things as Remote Start, Destination Search (powered by Google), and a car-care in-vehicle app.

The all-new 2015 Hyundai Sonata will go on sale early this summer; check back here for a full review and driving impressions ahead of its arrival.

The Car Connection

2015 Toyota Camry, 2014 New York Auto Show

The Basics:

An all-new 2015 Toyota Camry already? That's what some current Camry owners might think, as the current generation of this longtime best-selling sedan model has only been around for three model years. Yet today the Camry faces even stronger competition from recently refreshed versions of the Honda Accord, Ford Fusion, Nissan Altima, and others.

Toyota is in effect not resting on its laurels; it's given what it calls a sweeping redesign to the Camry for 2015—with a completely new look for the interior and exterior, added noise insulation, and upgraded driving dynamics.

While the change in appearance isn't radically different, it looks updated, more refined, and more contemporary inside and out. And the most significant change are under the skin. The Camry gets what Toyota calls an aggressive front-end appearance, with LED front running lamps plus available LED auto-leveling lamps for the low and high beams. Taillights get a new design that tapers in with the side sheetmetal, and a 'decorative garnish'—read chrome bar—runs across the trunk. Toyota calls that cue sporty, although it's a generic cliche.

The somewhat downmarket look and more 'chunky' feel of the outgoing Camry's dash have been wiped away, with a 'high-tech' look for the center stack and a newfound attention to materials and details. Upper dash areas now have soft-touch trims, and the area just ahead of the shift knob gets an enclosed bin for personal electronics, with a USB port and available wireless charging pad (as in the larger Avalon).

In all, the 2015 Camry has nearly 2,000 new parts compared to the 2014 model. Toyota says that everything is new except the roof. Toyota claims to have made some significant changes to improve the Camry's responsiveness. While the existing MacPherson strut, multi-link rear suspension layout does carry over into the 2015 Camry, a new calibration for the electric power steering and a retuned brake-booster system should help make it a better-driving car. So should a stiffer body structure and additional spot welds. As well, Toyota has added noise insulation at the floor, improved window and door seals, and redesigned the side mirrors for better airflow; all of this should help improve interior noise, which has been one of the current car's inadequacies.

What's under the hood is carried over, mostly. The 2015 Camry will remain powered by a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine or 3.5-liter V-6—both hooked up to a six-speed automatic transmission—or in the Hybrid model, a 2.5-liter Atkinson-cycle four-cylinder and Hybrid Synergy Drive system. New to the lineup this year is a new sporty SE version of the Camry Hybrid.

Toyota has further retuned the stability control system in SE models to intervene in a smoother way. And based on the success of the sporty SE model, a new XSE model has been added to the lineup and is the sportiest Camry yet, according to Toyota. with 18-inch wheels, unique shocks, firmer suspension bushings, and stiffer springs—as well. Both of these more performance-oriented Camry models get a mesh front grille and different front fascia.

The 2015 Camry will offer more active-safety features than before, including Lane Departure Alert, a Pre-Collision System with Auto High Beams, and a Blind Spot Monitor with Rear Cross Traffic Alert. Adaptive Cruise Control is also on offer with that feature set.

Features and pricing haven't yet been announced; but with the tight competitive environment amongst sedan models, we can only see the value situation getting better. Camry SE, XLE, and XSE models now all include Optitron gauges with a new 4.2-inch TFT display in between.

Will all these changes add up to a more refined, better-driving Camry that wages a stronger fight against key rivals? We hope to update you with full driving impressions and a full review here before the 2015 Toyota Camry goes on sale this fall.

2015 Dodge Charger Review, Ratings, Specs, <b>Prices</b>, and Photos <b>...</b>

The 2015 Dodge Charger retains its name and basic body shape, but you might never know it from the striking redesign that makes up the bulk of the second updating of a car first launched for 2005. The new Charger has a completely revised front end that changes its looks to make it look lower, sleeker, and far more modern than the bluff-fronted muscle sedan it's been to date. Add in an updated interior, revised powertrains, and new safety equipment, and the big rear-wheel-drive family sedan may find a whole new set of fans as it enters its second decade.

The exterior redesign touched every body panel except the roof and the rear doors. Basically, the stylists and body engineers "took a chainsaw to all four corners of the car" to reduce the visual bulk of its square-cut front and rear, according to Dodge's design team. The result is a 2015 Charger that's the same length as before, but looks 8 to 10 inches more compact--more like a mid-size car with significant presence than the full-size sedan it actually is.The front is lower, with an almost BMW-like bevel at the front edge of the redesigned hood, and the slimmer blacked-out Dodge crosshair grille is bracketed by projector headlights outlined with distinctive C-shaped LED daytime running lights. Separate LED light units are built into a revised front bumper, and the center of the bumper bar is blacked out on R/T models, just as it is on higher-performance models of the smaller Dodge Dart.

The side profile, including a Coke-bottle rear fender swell, a high beltline, and hard-edged roof pillars, has remained the same, but now the rear is smoother and less angular, with more wraparound to the rear lights. The "LED racetrack" outlining the rear lights is retained, but Dodge has cut the number of LEDs by more than half using light pipes to give a continuous red outline to the tail panel. The rear bumper is smoother and exhaust inlets are now integrated into the lower panel. On the trunk lid, the raised spoiler has been replaced by a smaller lip spoiler that provides the same downforce in a cleaner, more integrated look.

Overall, the 2015 Charger retains its commanding shape, but in a smoother and more refined way. It looks like a car that will slip powerfully through the air rather than batter it aside through brute force. The retro detailing has given way to a more integrated appearance tying it to the rest of the modern Dodge family, making it less flamboyant--but still both practical and capable of muscle-car behavior.

Inside, you pay for pay for that high beltline with outward visibility that's more limited than in other sedans. Still, the upright styling is unchanged--despite the sleeker front and rear ends--and it gives plenty of headroom all around. The wide front seats are well bolstered, and the big doors make getting in and out easy. The rear-seat legroom is a little tight for long-legged tall people, but complainers can be silenced by reminding them that it meets police-car standards. Dodge has added a 7-inch thin-film TFT screen to the center of the instrument cluster, while the center stack includes a touchscreen up to 8.4-inches across, used for  3-D navigation and downloadable apps.

For 2015, all Chargers are now offered with the eight-speed automatic transmission formerly confined to the less powerful V-6 models. The base engine for the SE model is a 292-horsepower Pentastar 3.6-liter V-6 producing 260 lb-tt of torque, and it's the fuel economy champ. EPA ratings won't come for several months, but Dodge promises 31 mpg on the highway test cycle. The more powerful SXT model with the Rallye Appearance Group (made up of a cold-air intake, some engine-control software tweaks, and a new exhaust system) boosts those numbers to 300 hp and 264 lb-ft. Either V-6 model comes standard with rear-wheel drive, and all-wheel drive is optional. Then there's the 5.7-liter Hemi V-8, rated at 370 hp and 395 lb-ft of torque, only offered in rear-wheel drive form. Details on the higher-performance 2015 Charger SRT with an even more powerful 6.4-liter Hemi V-8 will be released at a later date.

The Dodge Charger handles well for a big sedan, with little body roll in any of its versions. The 2015 version uses electric power steering fitted as standard with three different feedback modes: Normal, Comfort, and Speed. The suspension has been retuned, with cast aluminum axles lighter than the steel ones they replace, and a sport mode that makes throttle mapping more aggressive and speeds shifting, cutting gear change time from 400 milliseconds to just 250.

Previous models of the Charger earned the highest five-star overall score in NHTSA safety testing, and it's been an IIHS Top Safety Pick in years past. A rearview camera system, active cruise control, and blind-spot monitors are available in addition to all the expected standard items.

Even the base Charger SE trim level includes power windows, locks, and mirrors; air conditioning; cruise control; pushbutton start; a power driver's seat; and an AM/FM/CD audio system with touchscreen control. The SXT level adds a number of additional features, and for 2015, six new 20-inch alloy wheel designs are available, including a 20x9 inch forged aluminium wheel option. Dodge has also upgraded the paint colors, adding a set of 'heritage' color options, including B5 Blue and TorRed. The revised Charger also adds several new technical features, including the latest version of Uconnect services, which incorporate 9-1-1 and assist call, roadside assistance calling options, theft alert, voice texting and a Wi-Fi hotspot.

Production of the 2015 Dodge Charger is slated to begin in the fourth quarter of 2014, with deliveries soon after.

2015 Dodge Challenger Review, Ratings, Specs, <b>Prices</b>, and Photos

Posted: 16 Apr 2014 04:31 PM PDT

The 2015 Dodge Challenger is the first truly major update of the muscle car since it was launched as a 2007 model. It's been a long time coming, but with carefully refined exterior styling, new powertrains, upgraded suspension, and an all-new--and far more pleasant--interior, the Challenger stays up to date in the face of competition from not only the Chevy Camaro but an all-new Ford Mustang this year.

The Challenger has always been the largest and blockiest of the muscle cars, giving it substantial road presence. Looked at through a different lens, the Challenger has been slightly more of a touring coupe--large and comfortable, with a supple ride on long trips. Now that persona is joined by an array of even more powerful, rip-up-the-track models at the top end, for Challenger buyers who want to keep pace with the most powerful vehicles in the competition's lineups.

The revised exterior styling adopts cues from the classic 1971 Challenger, including a new split grille in a slimmer front opening with projector headlamps surrounded by LED halos, a pronounced and fully functional "power bulge" hood, and LED tail lamps in a glossy piano black surround. The basic shape remains unchanged, with a long nose, flat hood and deck lid, thick Seventies-inspired roof pillars and a pronounced kickup in the waistline. It keeps the Challenger more faithful to its decades-old ancestors than either the Camaro or Mustang, which have evolved with the ages.

Inside, the 2015 Challenger's interior has been completely revamped. The sweeping surfaces of hard black plastic are gone, replaced by a modern dash with soft-touch surfaces and a fully modern instrument cluster with a fully customizable 7-inch Thin Film Transistor (TFT) center display screen. The available 8.4-inch touchscreen in the center of the dash includes the UConnect Access system, with apps and navigation as well as the usual audio functions.

The center console has a higher edge on the passenger side, inspired by the 1971 Challenger, and the dash, instruments, and console has aluminum accents. Among the 14 options for interior color and trim is a classic Houndstooth premium cloth that Dodge actually calls a "throwback" to the 1970s, and premium leather and Alcantara suede high-performance seats.

Its slightly larger size pays dividends inside: The Challenger is the only one of the three muscle coupes to offer seating for five. Access to the back seat will entail some contortion, and only two adults will really fit back there, but it's doable. At 16 cubic feet, the trunk is also larger than those of even some mid-size sedans on the market.

The standard powertrain on the 2015 Challenger is a 305-horsepower 3.6-liter V-6. Then there's the 5.7-liter Hemi V-8, which will be rated at up to 375 hp and 410 lb-ft or torque. Finally, there's a new 6.4-liter Hemi V-8 that Dodge estimates at 485 hp and 475 lb-ft of torque. All three engines can be mated to a new eight-speed automatic transmission, the only one offered on any of the three U.S. muscle cars, with a Sport Mode and paddle shifters as well as visual and tactile feedback on the electronically-actuated shift lever. A six-speed manual gearbox remains available as well. Like all three of its competitors this year, the Challenger remains a rear-wheel-drive vehicle with independent rear suspensions.

The new and larger Hemi is expected to deliver 0-to-60-mph acceleration times in the mid-4 second range with the automatic, and quarter-miles in the low 12-second range. Dodge has also added a new launch-control function, and electronic stability control with three modes, including a fully-off position.

Gas mileage has never been a strong point for the large and heavy Challenger, especially in V-8 form, but the eight-speed automatic will help on that front. EPA ratings haven't yet been issued, but Dodge says figures will improve across the board--although gas mileage also isn't of major importance to Challenger buyers.

Suspension changes across the board include a Super Track Pak available on all Challenger models, uprated suspension, and new electric power steering with three modes: Normal, Comfort, and Sport. A fully track-ready 6.4-liter Scat Pack model includes not only the 6.4-liter Hemi but also 20-inch aluminum wheels, Brembo disc brakes, and the 392 Scat Pack Shaker model adds a functional Shaker hood inlet scoop.

While earlier Challenger models weren't rated for safety by either of the U.S. agencies, it includes a good array of safety equipment, including knee airbags. For 2015, Dodge has upgraded and increased the standard and available safety equipment on the 2015 Challenger. Among the available features are a backup camera, adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-patch detection, forward-collision warning, and UConnect access with 911 and Assist calling.

Eight separate trim levels will be offered on the 2015 Challenger: SXT, SXT Plus, R/T, R/T Plus, R/T Shaker, R/T Plus Shaker, 6.4-liter Scat Pack and 392 HEMI Scat Pack Shaker. Customization options mean no two Challengers need be identical, with fourteen different interiors, nine wheel options, and a range of new paint colors, including retro shades like Sublime Green and B5 Blue.

Production is scheduled to begin in the third quarter of 2014. Pricing won't be released until closer to the sale date, but the very highest-end models will likely approach $60,000--taking them into some rarified territory. On the other hand, Challenger sales have increased steadily throughout its life, so there's clearly a market for a retro muscle car. And now it's got an all-new retro-inspired interior with all the modern conveniences to go with the mix of yesterday's styling and today's performance.

Black Book Sees Used Car Price Drop Coming for Five Popular Segments |

used-cars

Heavy storms in January and February had a big impact on pent-up demand and used car prices blossoming in March, as the NADA Used Car Guide and ADESA Analytical Services' reports demonstrate this week. Seasonal patterns always carry their weight, and Black Book is expecting to see some notable performance trends, according to Ricky Beggs, Editorial Director at Black Book. That has a lot to do with the historic tax-buying season for used vehicles as lots of shoppers use tax rebates on used car purchases.

When you review the chart created by Black Book, you'll see how five popular car segments are expected to perform in May-July 2013 retention. They've been showing strong retention lately (four out of five of them had price increases in March), but should have above-average depreciation in the short-term future. Making this list were Entry Mid-Size Car, Full-Size Car, Full-Size Crossover, Upper Mid-Size Car, and Compact Car.

Cars have taken the biggest hit – representing four out of five of the top leading segments in depreciation. Black Book has been carefully watching how gasoline prices have been affecting cars – while they're higher than usual lately, the gas pump price increase is typical for the season and is probably not enough of an increase to strengthen used car segment prices.

The biggest hit among these five popular categories should be taken by Entry Mid-Size Cars, which have an expected loss of 5.9% in May-July 2013 retention. Its April 2014 market value of $10,741 is expected to reduce down to $10,107 by July.
